BIG TOM MIX
"This was his automobile, he was traveling across country in, and had an accident near Florence, Arizona." Gilliland explained. "He died in this car." The 1937 super-charged Cord has had several owners over the years.
"Now Bob White (of Arizona) has the car, and has done a first class, quality restoration to restore the car as it was 15 minutes before that date in 1940." Mix was said to have made over 330 films between 1910 and 1935. Only three people in the world had a car like Mix's back in the 40's.
"He added all these little leathers to the car," White said. "The medals on the front, the Kind of Denmark gave to him." There is even a gun holster inside the car, and the gas pedal has been custom fitted for Mix's cowboy boot. The project has taken nearly a year and a half to complete.
"This whole look is all of what Tom Mix did," White added. Bob Hansen has been an advisor on the restoration project, his 1937 Cord has "...has won every award imaginable," White said.
"They only made 196 of these super-charged cars," White continued. "And there's two of them setting in Wellington right now." The Tom Mix car has a busy schedule ahead of it, touring the classic car show circuit. This weekend it will be in Ohio for two shows, then it's headed to Ponca City, Okla. and sevearl other stops before it goes back with White to Arizona.
"We tried to duplicate the car to exactly what he had in 1940," White said. "That's the fun part of it I think."
