One participant at a time was invited to sit with me to talk about motherhood, lactation, sexuality and grief. We discussed the signification of a body that has not had - nor may ever have - a child choosing to perform maternal acts. With the aid of a Supplementary Nursing System, I offered them my breast. Those that took up the offer expressed deep rooted feelings of comfort, elation, desire and liberty. Samantha Sweeting is a visual artist based in London. Drawing upon memory, myth, psychoanalytic theory, fairytale and folklore, her work uses embodied storytelling to examine human/animal nature and nurture, boundaries and desire.
